Explanation

The Ultra Saurus is a Republic Zoid of the Ultra Saurus type[2]. It was designed by Professor Herbert Lee Chester, a scientist of the Helic Republic[4]. Development began in ZAC 2035[7], and the machine rolled out in ZAC 2037[2].

It had the ability to act as the Republic’s command flagship, coordinating the entire army[8].

Its main armaments were heavy firepower such as linear cannons and missile pods[2]. The abdomen contained living quarters for the crew[8], and it also functioned as a mothership capable of carrying 24 Zoids[9]. Additionally, up to three Pegasuros-class Zoids could be carried[3].

The head was equipped with a high-speed battle computer, capable of analyzing combat situations and issuing formation commands to units[8]. Though heavily armed and equipped with advanced communication functions, the crew was divided among operators — communication officers, pilots, and gunners — to reduce the individual workload[1].

In terms of strength ratio, it was superior: Sabre Tiger 1:5, Iron Kong 1:4, Red Horn 1:10[10]. Until the appearance of the Death Saurer, it was an invincible Zoid[2].

Its weaknesses lay in its huge size: sluggish movement and vulnerability in close combat with high-speed Zoids[2]. On land, it reached a maximum of 50 km/h, but on water it achieved 47 knots, making it more effective in naval operations[2].

During the 1st Generation series, it was mass-produced[3]. However, by the 2nd Generation series, most were destroyed in the ZAC 2056 Planet Zi Disaster, leaving only the President’s personal machine in deployment[2].

Anime (Zoids -ZOIDS-)

In this setting, it was treated as a Zoid excavated and reactivated by the Republic army. (See: Ultra Saurus MoS for details.)

Battle Story

“Zoids Battle Story” (Shogakukan)

First appears in *Zoids Battle Story* Volume 1. In ZAC 2037, information on its development was obtained by Imperial Army spy command “Echo” (Lieutenant Colonel), who launched a capture operation. The Ultra Saurus withstood missile attacks from the Salamander, showing its toughness. In response, Republic Army 2nd Lt. Roy J. Thomas led a recapture operation. When two Gojulases halted its movement momentarily, a precision shot from a Cannon Tortoise destroyed the Ultra Saurus canopy, succeeding in its recapture[15]. The Empire, seeing that mass production of the Ultra Saurus would endanger them in terms of national power and production capacity, moved to early decisive battle[16].

Later that year, during the battle at Zabriski Point in the far north of the Central Continent, Echo transmitted a false Republic distress signal to lure in the Ultra Saurus. The machine was driven into crisis by attacks from Echo’s Iron Kong Mk-II, but Thomas’ Gojulas Mk-II, hanging beneath a Salamander overhead, intervened. Although Echo gained the upper hand, his momentary lapse of focus allowed the Ultra’s supporting fire, giving Thomas the victory[17].

In ZAC 2038, during an Imperial encirclement operation in the border region known as “Parrot’s Beak,” the Ultra Saurus carried more than ten crew members and came under pursuit near the border. Unleashing all weapons at once in an all-directional barrage so powerful it enveloped the unit in a white flash (and cratered the ground), it destroyed the surrounding Imperial large Zoids and escaped[18].

Later that year, it departed Cooper Port, joining an amphibious landing operation from Miibaros Bay into Imperial territory, ultimately bombarding Imperial headquarters[19].

In *Zoids Battle Story 2* (ZAC 2039), it participated in the Imperial capital offensive, serving as the Republic command headquarters[20]. Colonel Erickson attempted to capture Zenebas in an Ultra Saurus bearing the E-mark, but was stopped by General Danny Duncan while trying to shoot down Sinkers bound for the Dark Continent[21].

In ZAC 2041, during Zenebas’ return operation, torpedo attacks from Wardicks targeted Ultra Sauruses moored in port[22].

In ZAC 2044, Lt. Toby Duncan’s Death Saurer clashed fiercely with Colonel Erickson’s Ultra Saurus. As the Death Saurer marched across a bridge, it was ambushed by the Ultra Saurus from the water’s surface, forcing it into the river. Erickson’s Ultra followed up with suppressive bombardments and attempted to drown it, but at the last moment the Death Saurer broke the Ultra Saurus’ neck and crushed its cockpit, killing Erickson[23].

In *Zoids Battle Story 3* (ZAC 2045, March), Ultra Saurus joined the Death Saurer capture operation in coordination with Salamanders, but the attempt failed[24]. In July of the same year, it participated in a diversionary naval battle to support the Republic’s Gelmanzy Peninsula landing. An Ultra Saurus was struck by a charged particle cannon blast to the sea’s surface, hurled ashore and critically damaged. However, before destruction, it succeeded in firing upon and destroying the Death Saurer’s charged particle intake fans from behind. With its weapon disabled, the Death Saurer was overwhelmed by multiple Ultra Saurus bombardments and destroyed[25].

In ZAC 2046 (March), another Ultra Saurus, transported disassembled part by part, was reassembled to aid guerrilla forces in their successful assault on an Imperial base in the Central Mountains[26].

In *Zoids Battle Story 4* (ZAC 2048, August), it fought in border skirmishes, destroying several Great Sabers. However, a Golem infiltrated the machine, set explosives, and destroyed it[9].

“Official Zoids Fan Book” (Shogakukan) In the new series, most were wiped out by the Zi disaster, leaving only the President’s personal machine. That surviving Ultra Saurus was remodeled into variations such as Ultra Saurus The Destroyer and Ultra Saurus The Carrier, which went on to play roles in battle.

Games

  • Appears in *Zoids: Battle of the Central Continent*, *Zoids 2: Zenebas’ Counterattack*, and *Zoids Apocalypse*.

In the RPGs (*Battle of the Central Continent* and *Zenebas’ Counterattack*), it joins the party when certain conditions are met.

As a powerful ally Zoid, it greatly aids game completion (though it is possible to clear the game without it).

As a mothership unit, it performs roles faithful to the anime.

In the final battle against the enemy faction Mucus in “Operation Extend,” it creates an entry point into the Mucus Genesis outer shell with its Gravity Cannon.
  • In *Zoids: Material Hunters*, the Ultra Saurus appears in its *Zoids Concept Art* design, serving as a mission boss[27].

Variations

Ultra Saurus MoS

Name Ultra Saurus MoS
Affiliation Helic Republic / Guardian Force
Classification Ultra Saurus-type
Length 555 m[28]
Height 333 m[28]
Width Unknown
Weight Unknown
Top Speed Unknown
Main Pilots Colonel Rob Herman (Commander) (*Zoids: Chaotic Century*) / Moonbay (Pilot) (*Zoids: Chaotic Century*)

Appears in the anime *Zoids: Chaotic Century*. Equipped with an operations bridge, the machine can house multiple large Zoids within, functioning as a mobile base. It contains multiple internal power engines. The 360 mm Linear Cannons are not equipped; instead, later the body’s sides were fitted with Gravity Cannons and their power generators.

The Gravity Cannon is the Ultra Saurus’ most powerful armament: a massive cannon over 400 m in length (even longer including the loading device and exhaust apparatus at the rear), capable of firing a 25 m diameter Planetalite shell. When external pressure is applied upon impact, the super-heavy metal Planetalite, which possesses internal gravity, triggers a gravitational collapse, creating a black hole phenomenon[29]. Due to its nature, Planetalite shells are extremely difficult to mass-produce[注5].

Under Rob Herman as Supreme Commander, the Ultra Saurus MoS became the flagship of the Guardian Force in the battle against the Death Stinger.

This machine designation comes from its appearance in the *Zoids Battle Card Game*. In the anime *Zoids: Chaotic Century*, it is referred to simply as the Ultra Saurus.

In-Series Appearances

Anime *Zoids: Chaotic Century*

Excavated by the Republic Army, it was secretly stored in the disguised lake “Windyne Lake.” After both the Imperial capital Gaigallos and the Republic capital New Helic City were destroyed by Hiltz’s Death Stinger, the Republic’s final operation was launched, and the major leaders of both nations moved into this machine to serve as their command tower.

However, its Zoid Core was not fully awakened, leaving it in scrap condition and unable to activate. Because they did not realize in time that the multiple independent power block cores had to be linked together, it came under attack from swarms of Hell Cats unleashed by Hiltz. At the same time, the Death Stinger targeted it with its Charged Particle Cannon, piercing through mountains in its path.

Just before the cannon struck, the Ultra Saurus activated and set course for the Piledem Islands to undergo armament upgrades. Along the way, it evaded pursuit by luring Hiltz’s Sinkers and even the Death Stinger into methane hydrate deposits.

From episode 62 onward, it was equipped with Gravity Cannons developed by Dr. D, and nearly disabled Hiltz’s Death Stinger. However, it suffered heavy damage from the fully evolved Death Saurer, which had fused with the Death Stinger’s Zoid Core. In the climax, it launched Van Flyheight’s Blade Liger from its Gravity Cannon in a desperate attack, destroying the enemy.

Anime *Zoids: New Century/Zero*

A different individual appeared as the headquarters of the Zoid Battle Commission. This version was equipped with 360 mm Linear Cannons and housed an expansive internal communications chamber. It also possessed a powerful E-Shield, strong enough to withstand the tail-mounted Charged Particle Cannon of the Backdraft Group’s Death Stinger.

Additionally, the Ultra Saurus MoS appeared in a decayed state as the finish line for the Royal Cup. The chairman of the Zoid Battle Commission referred to this machine as the “Ancient Ultra Saurus.”

An advanced type of Ultra Saurus equipped with, in addition to the Long Range Buster Cannons (back), beam cannons (forelegs) and a 4-tube shock cannon (hind legs)[注6]. Also referred to as the “supreme flagship Zoid[30].”

This was one of the modification examples included in the *“NEW Modification Set (Republic Large Mecha)”* released during the 1st Generation Zoids series, and it was prominently featured as the main image on that kit’s product package.

In games, it appears in three titles from the 2nd Generation series:

  • *Zoids -ZOIDS- Resurrection of the Evil God! ~Geno Breaker Chapter~*
  • *Zoids: Republic VS Empire – Gene of Bio-Machines[注8]*
  • *Zoids 2: Helic Republic VS Guylos Empire*

In *Resurrection of the Evil God!*, it is a Zoid boasting the highest HP and weapon load capacity in the game. However, across the games there are some discrepancies: in all graphics the foreleg beam cannons appear, but only in *Republic VS Empire* are they actually usable. Additionally, in *Republic VS Empire* and *Helic Republic VS Guylos Empire*, the 4-tube Shock Cannon is missing in both graphics and status data, so the “NEW Modification Set” custom is not represented completely accurately.

In-Series Activity

Battle Story

In December, ZAC 2042, it participated in the Republic Army’s Cook Base assault operation. It played a role as a diversion, contributing to the Republic Army’s encirclement strategy[34]. During this operation, two such machines appeared. They engaged Iron Kongs piloted by Schmidt and Rudolf, students of Captain Franz Hartmann, and were destroyed[34].

Zoids Battle Comic

Also appeared in the manga published in *Shougaku Sannensei* (Elementary School 3rd Grade). In the Battle of Cook Base, one unit participated, helping to surround the Imperial Army via diversion[36][注10]. Later, in the battle on the northern coast, the decoy Helic’s machine was struck directly in the cockpit by Franz Hartmann’s hand missile and was destroyed[37].

8-Tube Missile Launcher[注6]
Anti-Air Beam[注6][注7]

Appeared in *Zoids Battle Story* Volume 3 as a customized Zoid developed for combat against the Death Saurer[40].

The lower half is based on the Ultra Saurus, with the upper body of a Gojulas, the radar of a Gorgodos, and the wings of a Salamander — creating the strongest combined Zoid[40]. However, since it required dismantling four of the Republic’s main Zoids, mass production was impossible, and only one unit existed as part of the Presidential Guard[42].

It wielded the Buster Bowgun, a massive bow capable of blowing away small mountains, and the Buster Lance, a giant superalloy spear able to pierce even thick Zoid armor. Combined with the melee ability of the Gojulas, the flight capability of the Salamander, the electronic warfare ability of the Gorgodos, and the power and firepower of the Ultra Saurus, its overall combat ability was said to surpass even the Death Saurer[40]. However, it had the weakness of consuming massive amounts of energy, resulting in short operational range[40].

In-Series Activity

Battle Story

In August, ZAC 2046, it was brought into the Republic Army’s Central Mountain headquarters, boosting the morale of Republic soldiers. Helic himself, alongside Guard Captain Rosa, boarded it to sortie and save allies in crisis at Red River. The Centaur performed with the ferocity of a demon, scattering Imperial positions one after another.

Later, it was ambushed by Captain Franz of the Imperial Army in his Death Dog, who attempted to assassinate Helic. Helic was forced to evacuate, leaving Rosa behind to face Franz. In a fierce duel, Rosa and Franz’s Death Dog destroyed each other[43].

Battle Comic

Appeared in the manga *Zoids Battle Comic*, serialized in *Shougaku Sannensei* (Elementary School 3rd Grade) from April to October 1988. Developed to counter the Death Saurer piloted by Captain Franz, it was piloted by Major Duke.

In its first surprise attack, it used its Ultra Cannon to destroy the Death Saurer’s arm[44]. It maintained superiority with its raw power, successfully repelling the Death Saurer. Its exploits then contributed to the fall of seven Imperial bases.

However, following Emperor Zenebas’ orders, Franz devised a counter-Centaur operation. The Centaur was ambushed by three Death Saurers. Using its Buster Lance, it easily defeated two, but in the opening left behind, it was struck by the Charged Particle Cannon of Franz’s unit, destroying its wings and forcing a retreat. This exposed its weakness: the wings[41].

Finally, it fought against the Mad Thunder stolen by Franz. The Centaur’s Buster Lance could not pierce the Mad Thunder’s shield, and it was defeated by the counterattack from the Magneisers[45].

Main Pilot Major Rob Herman (Battle Story)
Armament 360 mm Linear Cannons ×4 / 8-Tube Missile Launcher / 1200 mm Ultra Cannons ×2[14] / Gojulas Cannons ×6[14] / Various Anti-Air Armaments (tail missile launchers)[14]

A modified Ultra Saurus outfitted with two 1200 mm Ultra Cannons, one mounted on each side of the body, as well as six Gojulas Cannons and tail-mounted missile launchers[14]. Additionally, a new fire-control room was installed on the back[55]. Due to its heavy armament, its movement speed dropped to under 20 km/h[56]. It was said to have been designed by a Republic scientist known for his daydreaming[57].

Weapons

1200 mm Ultra Cannon Mounted on both sides of the Destroyer’s torso (two total). With a range of 100 km, each shot carried the destructive power to annihilate an entire small city[57]. However, the weapon had many flaws, including extreme recoil, maintenance issues, and a severe decrease in mobility[57]. Because the stabilizer/anchor system was incomplete[55], two Gojulases specially modified as support units had to brace the Ultra Saurus during firing[58]. Even then, the strain on the Ultra itself was enormous, and the machine could withstand only about 10 shots before breakdown. As a result, the cannons were removed when the machine was later refitted into the Ultra Saurus The Carrier[59].

Gojulas Cannons A total of six were mounted on its back. Identical to the standard Gojulas armament, these alone had the firepower to annihilate an entire Zoid battalion in a single volley[14].

Various Anti-Air Armaments The tail section was modified to mount missile launchers for anti-air defense[14].

In-Series Activity

In September, ZAC 2100, it was assigned to the Destroyer Division and piloted by Major Rob Herman. At Red Rust, it fired its 1200 mm Ultra Cannon from a distance of 100 km, wiping out 300 Zoids within a 3 km radius, setting ablaze 700 Zoids in the next 7 km, heavily damaging 800 Zoids at 3 km beyond that, and moderately/lightly damaging 2700 more Zoids, virtually annihilating the entire force[56][注12].

In October of the same year, it captured Nixie Base, contributing to the Republic’s victory in the Western Continent War[56][注13].

In January, ZAC 2101, while being refitted, it came under intense aerial bombardment by the Imperial Zabat units[61]. Subsequently, it was completed as the Ultra Saurus The Carrier[62].

Notes

  • Based on a scrapped concept for customization parts[63].
  • Considered for release but never commercialized[55].
  • The filming model was equipped with a BB pellet firing mechanism[55].
  • The tail missile launcher concept was a leftover idea from when the RZ-037 Ultra Saurus consolidated the light gimmick’s power source, freeing up space[63].
  • Its design was inspired by railway cannons[55].

Ultra Saurus The Carrier

Height 27.5 m[64]
Weight 900.0 t[64]
Top Speed 27.5 knots[64]
Main Pilot Captain Millory Ruditt[65] (Battle Story)

A modified Ultra Saurus, refitted into an aircraft carrier type after the Ultra Saurus The Destroyer had expended its 1200 mm Cannons[59], for use in the Dark Continent landing operations. It features a central rear flight deck for launch and recovery, capable of carrying up to 10 flying Zoids[59]. Additionally, it is armed with three triple-mounted Long Range Buster Cannons, installed on the left and right sides and the rear[59].

In-Series Activity

In June, ZAC 2101, it participated in the Under Ocean Naval Battle. However, faced with a massive Shinkers force, it was forced to divert and break through to Triangle Daras. Guided by the Eisen Dragoons’ Maccartis, it successfully made landfall on the Dark Continent[62].

In mid-October of the same year, during the battle in the southern Bifrost Plains, it conducted naval gunfire to protect headquarters[66].

In the later Neo-Zenebas War, it no longer appeared after the Central Continent return scenes.

Ultimate Phalanx

Affiliation Helic Republic
Classification Ultra Saurus-type
Length 65.0 m[67]
Weight 548.0 t[67]
Top Speed 42 knots[67]
Armament

- Triple Large-Caliber Mortar
- Chest-mounted Triple Large-Caliber Mortar

A variation first introduced in the game Zoids Saga II. It is a remodeled version of the Ultra Saurus with modified weapons and armor. While extremely powerful, its speed and carrying capacity are inferior to the standard Ultra Saurus.

Ultra Devils

ULTRA DEVIL[68]

Affiliation Helic Republic[68]
Classification Ultra Saurus-type
Length 50.0 m[68] / 56.0 m[69]
Height 27.5 m[68][69]
Weight 518.0 t[68] / 507.0 t[69]
Top Speed 38.0 km/h (land)[68]

A remodeled machine that appeared in Zoids Battler Raiga and Zoids Remodeling Manual. In appearance, it is an Ultra Saurus equipped with a quad machine gun on the neck, retractable claws on both sides of the body (based on Gojulas’s arms), and Long-Range Buster Cannons. However, its true tactic lies in its neck splitting to either side, revealing a massive hidden blade, the “Killer Axe”, which it swings down upon foes[68].

In Zoids Battler Raiga, it appeared as the customized work of Okuma, the representative of the Hokkaido Zoids Gym. Its name and concept were said to be inspired by the creature “Kusshii” allegedly sighted in Lake K, Hokkaido. In battle, Ultra Devils attempted to strike Burning Liger with its Killer Axe, but Burning Liger avoided the attack using hover units installed on its limbs, then counterattacked with its Laser Blade and destroyed it[70].

The Ultra Devils first appeared in Shogaku Yonensei (Elementary School 4th Grade magazine), January 2001 issue[69].

Battle Ship Saurus

BATTLE SHIP SAURUS[71]

Affiliation Helic Republic[71]
Classification Ultra Saurus-type
Length 50.0 m[71]
Height 27.5 m[71]
Weight 518.0 t[71]
Top Speed 38.0 km/h (land)[71] / 45.0 kt (sea)[71]

Appeared in Zoids Battler Raiga and Zoids Remodeling Manual. It is an Ultra Saurus remodeled with two Long-Range Buster Cannons on the starboard side. From the port side to the rear, a flight deck is installed, enabling the embarkation of flying Zoids such as Raynos and Pteras[71].

In Zoids Battler Raiga, it appeared as the customized creation of Jūzō Kondō, used in the virtual battle tournament “Zoids Coliseum.” Against a Burning Liger fitted with flight equipment, it deployed its carrier-based Pteras squadron in formation flight and attacked with long-range bombardment. However, once the Battle Ship Saurus itself (the mothership) was located, it was closed in upon and destroyed[72].

The Battle Ship Saurus first appeared in Shogaku Gonensei (Elementary School 5th Grade magazine), January 2001 issue[73].

Notes

  • However, in terms of combat power comparisons, it is considered difficult for the Saber Tiger to close into melee without being struck by the Linear Cannon, and even the higher-performance Lightning Saix lacks a decisive edge, so the win rate is said to be higher for the Ultra Saurus[11]. In addition, in Fan Book Vol. 4 the Ultra Saurus’s melee capability is rated as “A,” while the Saber Tiger and Lightning Saix are rated as “B+”[12].
  • Some sources identify the 8-shot missile launcher as a torpedo tube[8], while others describe its mounting location as the lateral side of the torso’s underside[3].
  • In the new series, its melee weaponry was newly redefined, a change it shares with the Brachios, another sauropod-type Zoid.
  • Although it does not affect the story, depending on player choice the Judge-Man can also pilot and battle in-game.
  • A total of 3 shells: one for test-firing, one for combat use, and one spare warhead. However, in the final battle at Evepolis, Dr. Dee manufactured one additional new warhead.
  • ^a b c d e f g h i j k l ZOIDS: The Resurrection of the Evil God! ~Geno Breaker Chapter~ Official Guidebook (2000, Shogakukan)[32]. In-game hiragana and abbreviated names are recorded using the kanji or toy kit’s official name (the Phase 2 series designations).
  • ^a b In-game, shares the same equipment as a normal Ultra Saurus. As for the “anti-air” “beam cannon,” it may refer to the AAZ 100mm twin beam gun, though details are unclear.
  • In “Wakoku vs Empire,” although no proper name is given, if a normal Ultra Saurus is modified with the item “Republic Strengthening Set 3,” it appears in this form.
  • During that battle, as many Ultra Saurus as possible were modified into this specification. To deceive the Empire, dummy models were placed at ground bases, while the refitting was conducted at sea[33].
  • In this version, the circumstances of the deaths of Franz’s pupils Rudolf and Schmidt differ: after escaping from the Iron Kong, they are killed by strafing fire from a Pteras[36].
  • As a remodeled Zoid, it has no official type designation, but upon seeing the Centaur-type, one soldier remarked that it was “like the centaurs of myth”[38].
  • At this time, the Empire had deployed 5,000 Zoids on the front line, with plans to field another 100,000 as reinforcements once preparations were complete. However, because this bombardment annihilated the front line, they avoided large-scale attacks out of consideration for the presence of the 1200mm Ultra Cannon, instead switching tactics to small- and medium-unit assaults of 10–30 Zoids to strike the Ultra Saurus directly[56].
  • As a result of this same bombardment, the Nixie Base command center and other key facilities were destroyed and silenced. At the same time, the Ultra Saurus The Destroyer’s gun barrels seized up from overheating. After the bombardment, the Republic Army stormed the base, commencing the battle for Nixie Base[60].
