Overview

At the end of the Continental War (First Intercontinental War), the Helic Republic combined its best technologies to create this Tyrannosaurus-type ultimate decisive battle Zoid for the showdown against the Dark Army (Guylos Empire) [1].

Its development base used the same wild body as the Gojulas [4], and internally it incorporated the “Gravity Controller” and “Energy Field” derived from Globally III [2]. The Gravity Controller assisted its movement [5], while the Energy Field supported its massive body [6]. The cockpit was heavily armored and equipped with a 3D display monitor [7].

Like the Gojulas, it excelled at close combat, overwhelming Dark Army Zoids with its full arsenal [8]. Its armor was so powerful it could repel normal Zoid attacks [3], even surviving a direct hit from the Death Cat’s Super Gravity Cannon [9]. It could also handle electronic warfare and underwater combat [1].

Even 40 years after its debut, into the Second Intercontinental War when new powerful Zoids were developed, none were said to surpass its combat ability [10].

Weapons & Equipment

Blade Horn

A blade-shaped horn on the forehead. It generates ultra-high heat of 10,000 degrees, glowing red as it slices enemies [7].

Super Sound Blaster

An ultrasonic weapon mounted in the mouth. It amplifies its roar hundreds of millions of times, emitting ultrasonic waves that cause resonance in enemy armor and shatter it [2]. The neck contains an ultrasonic amplifier, shielded by thick walls to block outside sounds [7].

Armored Cockpit

Located in the back of the head. Features heavy armor to protect the pilot, and a 3D display projecting outside visuals [7].

Missile Pod

Also mounted within the mouth [2].

Gun Flasher

An energy amplification device for the Super Gatling Guns, mounted in the chest [8].

Super Gatling Guns

Triple-barrel gatling guns in the chest center. They rotate three types of weapons—charged particle cannon, laser beam cannon, and railgun—firing 3,000 rounds per minute to annihilate any target [1][8]. Powered by an internal Rolling Charger, the three weapons fire in alternating bursts [7].

Double Cannons

Twin cannons mounted on either side of the Super Gatling Guns. They also rotate, firing superheated shells capable of piercing heavy armor [8].

Crusher Tail

The massive tail, swung at high speed to smash enemy Zoids [8]. Internally, it houses an engine to aid its movement [7].

Big Claws

The claws on both arms. Made of super-hard alloy, they can capture and tear apart foes, with hardness said to be 100 times that of diamond [7].

Multi-Radar Antennas

Dorsal fin-shaped antennas on the back, handling communications and jamming [8]. Four are installed:

  • Top: Communications Antenna
  • Second: All-Weather 3D Radar Antenna
  • Third: Large Composite Radar Antenna
  • Tail base: Ground Sensor Antenna [1]

Gravity Moment Barrier

A defensive barrier deployed from the Blade Horn, using energy from the Energy Field [2].

Kits

RPZ-24 King Gojulas

Released winter 1990. At 7,980 yen (tax excluded), it was the highest-priced product of the first series [note 1]. The box included a handle and stood nearly 60 cm tall. The catchphrase was: “It roars!! It fights!! The terrifying battle action mecha.”

The completed model stands about 36 cm tall and 40 cm long, with space for 1 pilot figure.

Like the Gojulas, it used two size C batteries for walking and two size AA batteries for lighting. The C batteries were placed in the torso, the AA batteries at the base of the tail. The power switch was the second dorsal fin at the base of the tail, which could be removed to attach a Grade-Up Unit. A lighting switch was also nearby. Walking and lighting could be operated separately, but in that case the Gun Flasher would not light up (the eyes still did).

When activated, the tail swayed left and right, arms moved up and down, and the chest-mounted Super Gatling Gun rotated while the Zoid walked forward, with its eyes glowing. Like Gojulas and Deathsaurer, the eyes blinked after a certain interval, with the adjacent Blade Horn glowing as well.

After walking for a time, the unit stopped, turned its head side to side, activated the Gun Flasher lights in the chest, spread its Big Claws wide, opened its mouth, and let out a loud roar. This sequence repeated twice before returning to its original actions.

This kit, together with the final release Death Cat, marked the end of the first Zoid series that had run from 1983 to 1990.

Until the launch of the Zoids Wild line in June 2018, only this unit and Mugen Liger (excluding the Evodrive series [note 2]) featured a gimmick where they performed an action sequence after walking.

During the 2006 Holotech Gojulas release campaign, King Gojulas was distributed as the grand prize.

HRZ-001 King Gojulas

Released September 25, 2008. This was a reissue of the original kit, with the following changes:

  • Cap color: changed from gray to white
  • Lighting switch color: changed from red to black
  • Battery orientation: changed from alternating +/- to both positive terminals facing forward
  • Battery cover: changed to screw-fastened

In the original, the eyes kept blinking until the light switch was turned off. In this version, once the switch was turned on, the eyes continued blinking constantly.

Prototype King Gojulas

Before the 1990 retail release, 100 prototype kits were distributed via a giveaway [8]. The prototype featured a darker blue-green color scheme compared to the light whitish-purple of the production model, though the red parts such as the Blade Horn remained the same.

In-Story Appearances

King Gojulas’s appearances were featured not only in the story text printed on its package but also in grade-school magazines published by Shogakukan between 1990 and 1991. However, its story was never compiled into an official “Battle Story” book. Furthermore, there are inconsistencies between these appearances and the 2008–09 “Zoids Rebirth Century” storyline.

Battle Story

At the end of the Intercontinental War in ZAC 2056, King Gojulas participated in the final decisive battle between the Republic Army and the Dark Army (Guylos Empire) on the Dark Continent. Bursting forth by smashing through a mountain, it instantly destroyed dozens of enemy Zoids and forced them into retreat. However, the outbreak of the Grand Catastrophe (Great Catastrophe of Planet Zi) rendered all Zoids immobile [1].

In the story published in *Zoids Graphics*, King Gojulas advanced into the Dark Continent during ZAC 20××, delivering a one-sided victory against enemy Zoid forces [8].

“Shogaku Ichinensei” (1st Grade Magazine)

King Gojulas debuted by destroying a mass-produced Iron Kong Mk-II with the Super Sound Blaster [11], then advanced accompanied by King Liger and King Baron. At a Dark Army base, it smashed Dead Border with a single tail strike [12], crushed Sieg Doberg and Gale Tiger underfoot, and annihilated numerous Zoids with its heavy weapons. Running out of energy, it faced the approach of Gil Vader, but struck it down with a single tail blow before advancing toward the Dark Army palace [13].

“Shogaku Ninensei” (2nd Grade Magazine)

Constructed in a secret factory within the Republic’s undersea dome [14]. Landing on the Dark Continent in the middle of a storm, it defeated Great Saber and battled Gil Vader [15][note 3]. Afterwards, it went on to destroy Deathsaurer [16], Sieg Doberg, Death Cat [17], and Gil Vader. However, just before its final battle with another Deathsaurer, a meteor struck Planet Zi, bringing the war to an abrupt end [18].

“Shogaku Sannensei” (3rd Grade Magazine)

First appeared during the Republic vs. Dark Army final battle in September, ZAC 2055. Dispatched to counter the Dark Army’s assault on the Republic’s energy base [19]. Though staggered by Ice Blazer’s suicide attack, King Gojulas destroyed Gun Gallard [20].

It then raided a Dark Army factory, surviving when the facility self-destructed [21], and marched with Salamander toward the Guylos Emperor’s palace. It defeated Gold Kong, Gale Tiger, Sieg Doberg, and other Zoids en route.

After the Emperor escaped [22], King Gojulas joined an assault on a hidden jungle base, battling Death Cat and Dark Horn. Ambushed by Gil Vader, it was saved from a Beam Smasher strike by the sacrifice of Orudios. Though it lost its left arm to Gil Vader’s Titan Claw, King Gojulas destroyed it with the Super Sound Blaster [9].

As it neared the hidden base, it confronted Gil Saurer piloted by the Guylos Emperor. Damaged in the abdomen by the Beam Saber and losing its tail to the Beam Smasher, King Gojulas countered by leaping onto Gil Saurer and unleashing the Super Sound Blaster at point-blank range, securing victory [23].

“Telebi-kun” (TV-Kun Magazine)

Crushed Sieg Doberg with its claws, then destroyed Gun Gallard with the Super Gatling Guns [24].

Zoids Rebirth Century

During Operation Revenge of River in ZAC 2056, President Helic himself piloted King Gojulas [25]. Landing in a thunderstorm alongside two Gojulas Mk-II units, it engaged in the final battle with the Dark Army.

Declaring five Gil Vaders as “my prey,” it began combat alone, demonstrating overwhelming strength. However, the outbreak of the Grand Catastrophe halted the war [25]. King Gojulas destroyed several meteors falling to the surface, but ultimately became immobile in front of the Guylos palace, where President Helic ordered its self-destruction [25].

Game Appearances

King Gojulas has appeared in the following games:

  • Zoids Apocalypse – Appears as the Republic’s strongest unit, set after the Grand Catastrophe, unlike the main Battle Story which ended abruptly.
  • Zoids: Resurrection of the Evil God! ~ Geno Breaker Chapter ~
  • Zoids Saga series
    • In *SAGA II*, it appears alongside Gil Vader as a hidden Zoid.
    • In *SAGA DS*, it sometimes appears in hidden post-game stages.

Other

In *Armored Giant God Z-Knight*, which shares continuity with the Zoids series, the King Gojulas kit appears as a “Mecha Dinosaur,” battling against Z-Knights.

In stories published in the grade-school magazines, a “dinosaur” suddenly emerged from a meteor that crashed to Earth, defeating Metal Foot units such as Norzer Graver and D. Viking. It was then injured by Sol Saver [26], only for the “Mecha Dinosaur” to appear from within it.

The Mecha Dinosaur was captured by Sol Saver and Death Battler using an electric net, then thrown into a lava pit inside a volcano where it melted [27]. However, it absorbed the lava’s energy and powered up, overwhelming Death Battler and Norzer Graver. To counter this, the sealed Armored Giant God Great Z-Knight was released [28].

Combining with Sol Saver, it unleashed a beam-like attack from its abdomen, decapitating the Mecha Dinosaur and defeating it [29].

Although ultimately unused, there was also a concept during the planning of the Eldran series’ first entry *Absolutely Invincible Raijin-Oh* (1991), to feature King Gojulas as a giant robot monster ally that would assist Raijin-Oh [30].

Notes

  • ^ Up until then, the highest-priced kits had been Ultrasaurus and Mad Thunder, both at 5,980 yen.
  • ^ A special completed-kit line released for the 25th anniversary of Zoids. These used rechargeable batteries and ultra-compact motors, making them distinct from regular Zoids (4 products total, including wind-up types).
  • ^ In this case, the Gil Vader mentioned in battle is inconsistently referred to as both “Gil Vader” and “Mini Gil Vader” within the same article [15].
