A transport-type insectoid Zoid [74]. During the Central Continent War, it was introduced due to the need for a large transport Zoid as the war became protracted [75]. The wild Zoid it was based on was considered unsuitable for combat due to its docile nature and low mobility [74]. However, during field tests, it demonstrated a high survival rate and was modified into a transport Zoid [74]. It was widely adopted for transport by the Republic, Empire, and civilians alike [74]. Its armor was reinforced compared to the wild species [75], and the cockpit was placed low to reduce the chance of being hit [76]. However, since it is not equipped with weapons, many units are sacrificed to enemy attacks [70][76]. It was retired from the front lines around ZAC 2051-2054 during the First Intercontinental War [77]. During the Second Intercontinental War (ZAC 2099-), it was operated by both the Helic Republic Army and the Guylos Empire Army [71]. Equipment (Old) refers to the designation during the Central Continent War (1st period). (New) refers to the designation during the Second Intercontinental War era (2nd period). All-Directional Radar (Old) / GPS Composite Sensor (New) Located on the top of the body. A radar that can capture information from all directions [76]. Explosive Detection Sensor (Old) / Land Mine Detector (New) Located on the Gustav's antennae. It senses underground conditions to locate and disarm landmines [76]. Impact-Resistant Shell Armor (New) The Gustav's armor. It is 48mm thick, 10mm thicker than the Red Horn, and its curved finish boasts a defensive capability that deflects missiles and causes warheads to slip [76]. Traction Platform (New) A trailer pulled by the Gustav. The wheels use an endless track, boasting high off-road performance [76][note 17]. It can transport several small Zoids or one large Zoid. It can also be fitted with various arms to function as a temporary mobile dock [72]. The standard Gustav is an unarmed unit, but if weapons are loaded on it, there is a possibility that it can function as a combat Zoid [4]. Furthermore, its use as a combat type with a large gun turret is also being considered [74][72]. Gustav Wild Form The Zoid that became the basis for the Gustav's modification is said to have a particularly strong exoskeleton among all living creatures on Planet Zi [72][74]. It has a docile personality, curling up and becoming immobile when attacked. However, the toughness of its exoskeleton and the fact that it is a multi-legged insectoid that can traverse deserts and rocky areas were the deciding factors for it to become the basis of a transport unit [75].
Kit (Gustav)
It has a power unit that runs on one AA battery, the same type as the Red Horn, and travels on wheels. The linked gimmicks include the extension and contraction of the exoskeleton and the up-and-down movement of the antennae, which are driven by the cam on the front wheels, as well as the rotation of the antenna via the output shaft on the top of the power unit. In the new series, only a version with a different color scheme, the Moonbay specification, has been released. Because the kit runs on wheels, it has a very strong pulling force. The trailer section is a combination of two sets of endless tracks (which have wheels on the underside for movement) and a coupler, with the panel base being a repurposed part from the Diorama Base Set. It can even transport an Ultrasaurus if placed on it. The only manual gimmick is the opening and closing of the head canopy.
RPZ-2 Gustav
Released in April 1986. The color scheme is gray for the armor, dark gray for the panel base, dark green for the other parts, and clear orange for the canopy. Early advertisements and catalogs showed the panel parts in the same color as the Diorama Set.
Zi-025 Gustav (Moonbay Specification)
Released in January 2000. While the old series kit only came with the trailer, the new series added various maintenance arms that were previously included as parts for the DZ-02 Diorama Base (Factory Base). Additionally, to match the anime, it also included figures of various anime characters such as Van, Fiona, and Zeke, in addition to the pilot Moonbay. The color scheme is red for the armor, orange for the panel base, silver for the maintenance parts, light green for the other parts, and clear orange for the canopy.
Role in Media (Gustav)
Battle Story
In the Battle Story, it is mostly treated as a workhorse that transports Zoids. Since it is not a combat Zoid, it has few opportunities to shine, but it still performs important tasks such as transporting supplies and ammunition in addition to Zoids. When the Zenebas Empire was destroyed, there is a scene where an Imperial Gustav transports the Zenebas-only Death Saurer [78].
Anime
Zoids: Chaotic Century
The Gustav itself, like in the Battle Story version, is widely used by the Republic, Empire, and civilians. Most of the Gustavs that appear in the series, excluding the Moonbay specification unit, are predominantly white-armored.
Zoids: New Century/Zero
Many Zoid Warriors use it for Zoid transport.
Zoids: Fuzors
A unit used by the heroine Sweet appears.
Zoids: Genesis
Units used by both the Extermination Force and the Digald Army appear. Yakuu from the Sky People and the Zoid repairman Jingo use it, with the former providing various weapons to the Extermination Force and the latter transporting La-Can's Sword Wolf to the final battleground.
Games
Zoids: The Battle of Central Continent & Zoids 2: The Revenge of Zenebas
It appears not as a playable character for battle, but as a support character (treated as an item in the former). It can be combined with other items to cross seas and other obstacles.
Zoids: Evil God's Resurrection! ~ Geno Breaker Saga
Appears as a medium-sized Zoid. There are a total of 4 types, including the standard one. ZOIDS: Imperial vs. Republic & ZOIDS 2: Helic Republic vs. Guylos Empire Appears as a unit that can be acquired by both the Republic and Empire.
"ZOIDS SAGA Series"
The Gustav appears as the transport Zoid that the protagonist party uses to move around the field. In SAGA, SAGA II, and SAGA DS, the protagonist party uses a red Gustav, while in SAGA FUZORS, they use a gray (standard color) Gustav. Other factions may use different color variations.
"ZOIDS VS. Series"
The red Gustav for Moonbay's exclusive use appears. There are no variation units, but it is possible to freely equip weapons in the slots. The regular Gustav is not implemented.
Zoids Tactics
The Gustav MV and Gustav EM appear. The regular Gustav is not implemented.
ZOIDS Material Hunters
It appears with an arranged design from the ZOIDS concept art [79]. In the description, it is introduced as a “transportation machine” as in the original, but it can be used in missions just like other Zoids.

The machine of the freelance transporter Moonbay. Its internal circuitry has been modified with bypasses, giving it a higher recovery ability than standard units [72]. Some media state that its self-repair capability is several times that of a standard unit [81]. In the anime Zoids: Chaotic Century, it has further unique modifications, such as a two-seater cockpit and retractable firearms in the armor. There was also a scene where it destroyed a Rev Raptor with a body slam.
The unit's name varies depending on the source. It is sometimes referred to as “Gustav Moonbay Specification” [82], “Gustav MS” [80], or “Gustav MV” [81].
New Moonbay Specification
After its armor was damaged by a direct hit from a Geno Saurer R's Charged Particle Cannon in episode 44 of the anime, the damaged areas were repaired, and some parts of its armor became white starting from episode 47 [note 18]. For differentiation, the official website at the time of the broadcast also referred to this as the “New Moonbay Specification” [83].
Role in Media
Battle Story
It appeared in the Battle of Red Last in April ZAC 2100. Moonbay successfully completed a transport request from the Imperial Army amid successive bombings of the Imperial Army's supply lines by the Republic Army, which had air superiority [84].
Anime Zoids: Chaotic Century
It traveled with Van, carrying a Shield Liger and Command Wolf on its trailer. In episode 52, it was equipped with a prototype booster developed by Dr. D, but because the booster was too powerful, it lost control and crashed into a cliff. Moonbay named this state “Gustav Evolution.” Manga Zoids: New Century Moonbay's machine here is called “Tartar.” It was on the verge of being scrapped but was revived by Moonbay herself.
Games
In Zoids: Evil God's Resurrection! ~ Geno Breaker Saga, it joins the party along with Moonbay. It has better equipment than the standard type, with a vulcan cannon added to its initial weapon rack [note 19]. In the ZOIDS VS. Series, it appears under the name “Gustav,” and in Zoids Tactics, it appears under the name “Gustav MV.” In both games, it is implemented along with Moonbay (although it is not related to the story in the VS. Series).
