In the Battle Story

During the Central Continent War, the Helic Republic—hard-pressed by the Zenebas Empire’s fast Zoid corps led by the Sabre Tiger—developed the wolf-type Zoid Command Wolf as a countermeasure. Known as the “Wolf of Mountain Warfare,” it was designed as a close-combat unit but excelled at pursuit and analysis, able to track enemies from the smallest clues, and was also used for independent reconnaissance missions. Its control display was the most advanced at the time, reducing pilot strain during operation.

Though it lacked the power of the contemporaneously developed Shield Liger, its maneuverability and ease of use earned the trust of pilots, functioning as a reliable support unit alongside the Shield Liger throughout the Central Continent War. By the Western Continent War, with few Republic Zoids able to match Imperial counterparts in its class, the Command Wolf became the backbone of the Republic’s high-speed units.

Armament & Equipment

*(Old = Central Continent War / 1st Series, New = 2nd Intercontinental War / 2nd Series)*

Mounted on the back. The turret can detach and operate independently as a recon vehicle, and also provide aerial fire support.

Waist-mounted. Launch smoke to confuse the enemy. Also doubles as an acceleration booster.

Mounted in the jaws. Generates electromagnetic waves, delivering devastating close-range attacks. Suited for striking enemy weak points.

The claws on all four limbs, which can be electrically charged for attack.

Wolf-type Zoids

The Command Wolf was based on wolf-type Zoids long used by the Wind Tribe of the Central Continent.

Originally domesticated for hunting, generations of selective breeding enhanced their intelligence, allowing them to understand human commands. During the tribal war era, they were used in transport, defense, and even sport. Around ZAC 1960, they were mechanized—replacing most of their bodies with artificial components—and by ZAC 2042, the Command Wolf rolled out.

Even in the 2nd Intercontinental War, wolf-types remained valuable thanks to their sheer numbers compared to Liger- or Tiger-types. However, Central Continent variants still could not overcome the superiority of the Lightning Saix.

Later, the Republic discovered larger wolf-type wild Zoids on the Western Continent, leading to the development of the König Wolf—a machine with power rivaling the Liger Zero.

Kits

Tomy Version

Powered by a large wind-up Hi-Power Unit. It features a simple quadrupedal walking gimmick but no interlinked mechanisms. Manual gimmicks include opening/closing the cockpit canopy, lower jaw movement, head/neck/tail articulation, rotation and separation of the dorsal turret. A unique feature is the variable speed mechanism: lowering the head engages an eccentric ballast gear with the Hi-Power Unit’s forward gear, reducing walking speed through added load.

According to TakaraTomy internal documents, total sales reached 988,000 units across the 1st and 2nd series.

HMM (Highend Master Model) Series

MSS (Modeler’s Spirit Series)

Released as 8th kit in 2013. Rear vehicle includes pilot bar-frame restraints. Includes custom diorama base.

Appearances in Media

Battle Story

Zoids Battle Story (Shogakukan)* First appeared in *Zoids Battle Story 2*. Debuted during the defense of Hadrian Wall in ZAC 2042, where it entered alongside the Shield Liger and outmaneuvered infiltrating Hellcats, earning its first victory. In the battles of ZAC 2043, participated in a surprise attack on the Empire’s giant Zoid development facility. Accompanied the Shield Liger, attacked Dimetrodons en route, and successfully advanced to the base after refueling from a Salamander. However, the base self-destructed, and the giant Zoid (Death Saurer) under investigation escaped capture. In *Zoids Battle Story 3*, took part in combat in the Central Mountain Range during August ZAC 2045. Served effectively in both reconnaissance and combat roles.

Zoids Battle Story (Gakunen Edition)* In the Central Mountain Range battle, defeated by Sabre Tiger due to speed disadvantage, resulting in its destruction.

Zoids Official Fan Book (Shogakukan)* From August to October ZAC 2099, units belonging to the Republic Army’s Independent 2nd Fast Battalion participated in the assault on Mt. Olympus. Attacked by Saber Tigers en route, several Command Wolves were destroyed, but thanks to the Shield Liger’s efforts, they reached the summit and engaged the Death Saurer. The climactic battle ended in a massive explosion, wiping out nearly all Republic forces involved—only Lt. Tommy Paris, one of the Command Wolf pilots, survived.

Anime

Zoids -ZOIDS-* Deployed as a standard Republic unit, also operated by various characters including Irvine’s customized unit. In episode 49, a flashback shows Dan Flyheight (Van’s father) piloting one against three Imperial Corps divisions under Prozen, managing to force a draw with a glowing phenomenon from its fangs. Initially, both the manga *Chaotic Centuryand the anime planned to make Van’s first protagonist Zoid a Command Wolf, but TakaraTomy’s internal marketing shifted it to the Shield Liger instead.

Zoids New Century /ZERO* Featured with the Ballad specification machine.

Zoids Fuzors* Featured the Command Wolf AC piloted by Maskman.

Zoids Genesis* Featured the Command Wolf LC as part of the Digald Suppression Army’s forces.

Manga

Chaotic Century (manga)* Van’s father’s machine appears, nicknamed “Zeke.” In a past battle against a Wild Zoid, it used its ultimate attack “Ragnarök Fang” at the cost of its life, becoming dormant in Wind Colony. Later, when Raven attacked, the Organoid Zeke merged with the Command Wolf (Zeke) to reawaken it. Ultimately, it used “Ragnarök Fang” once more, completely destroying itself, but succeeded in taking Raven’s Saber Tiger down with it.

This was a damaged Command Wolf abandoned on the battlefield, recovered and independently customized by Irvine. Known as the “Black Wolf”. Due to the heavy use of non-standard parts during repair, some specs are inferior to the normal model, but responsiveness and reaction speed were improved. Equipped with a Long Range Rifle originally designed for the Gojulas, it could penetrate even the armor of large Zoids with a direct hit.

When it first appeared in the anime, it was equipped with the twin beam gun turret, later upgraded with a spread missile system, and from episode 16 onward carried the Long Range Rifle. It was said to become “ill-tempered” when Irvine piloted any Zoids other than this one.

Naming There are variations in naming conventions: “Command Wolf Irvine Custom”, “Command Wolf AS” in the *Zoids Battle Card Game*, “Command Wolf IS (Irvine Special)” in *Zoids Saga 2* and *Zoids Tactics*, and “Command Wolf IRVINE” in the *Zoids VS. series*.

Production Notes According to Tomy’s Yutaka Tajima, the color scheme for the Irvine Custom was devised by the anime staff. Since the color specification could not be recreated with the standard Command Wolf kit, the scheme was reproduced by painting the runners before assembly. The Long Range Rifle was designed by Hiroshi Miyata, who also designed the Hybrid Vulcans for King Gojulas and Dark Horn in the first Zoids series.

In the Battle Story During the Second Full-Scale War in July ZAC2100, Irvine’s Command Wolf fought as part of a mercenary unit of Attack Zoids. After engaging Imperial forces, it moved to intercept an Iron Kong PK base incursion. Ultimately, it was destroyed while shielding the Gojulas the Ogre.

In the Anime First appeared in episode 3 of *Zoids: Chaotic Century*. It accompanied Van’s Shield Liger (later Blade Liger) and Moonbay’s Gustav on their journey. At one point, it was equipped with spread missiles to counter Raven’s Saber Tiger.

In episode 47, Irvine ignored warnings and engaged the Geno Breaker alone, suffering fatal damage to the Zoid Core. Later, when the Imperial Army’s Lightning Saix prototype suffered a test accident and its memory bank was damaged, the Command Wolf’s memory bank was transplanted into it.

In the Manga In the *Zoids Battle Story* manga published in *Shogaku Ninensei*, Irvine’s machine appears similar to the anime. It fought against a counterfeit Irvine piloting a fake Irvine Custom Command Wolf (nicknamed “Guntine”).

In Games Appears in:

In each of these titles, Irvine also appears as a character, and in *Resurrection of the Dark God*, *Saga*, and *Tactics*, his Command Wolf functions as his story-linked signature machine, consistent with his manga and anime portrayals.

It was described as a machine formally adopted by the Zenebas Empire, who, as a countermeasure against the Shield Liger units, procured or captured Command Wolves by any means available.

Because acquiring Republic-made parts was difficult, scavenging wreckage from downed enemy machines became common practice. For this reason, Republic forces nicknamed it the “Hyena Command”.

The primary pilot was Captain Wol Garrei of the Belna Kingdom Army, which had come under the control of the Zenebas Empire.

In addition to its main weapon, it carried systems like the variable head scope, spike anchors, and twin-layer frontal armor. It also used large hyper capacitors and electric transmission units to supply the railgun with sufficient power, and posture control systems embedded in the shoulders for firing stability.

During the Genoritter extermination mission, to increase penetration power, each unit was forced to channel 2.4× the normal power load into the railgun, resulting in evaporation at the rail-to-shell contact point. As a result, each machine was limited to a single shot.
