Gojulas is a fictional weapon from the *Zoids* franchise, released by Tomy (now Takara Tomy). It is also referred to as **Zoids Gojulas** . This article also covers its various derivative versions. ===== Overview ===== In official settings, Gojulas is classified as a Dinosaur-type Zoid . Some sources, however, describe it as a Tyrannosaurus-type . It debuted in 1984 as the third large motorized Zoid following Gigasaurer and Zoids Mammoth. In addition to walking, it featured a light-up gimmick, becoming one of the main sparks that ignited the early Zoids boom . In 1986, the upgraded variation **Gojulas Mk-II** was released, followed later by the simplified Mk-II Mass Production Type. In the second-generation Zoids line starting in 1999, Gojulas was reissued as part of the first wave lineup, with further variations such as **Gojulas the Ogre** and **Gojulas Mariner** also released. Gojulas is regarded as one of the representative icons and the flagship unit of the Zoids series. Particularly during the first generation—before the anime era where the Liger line took the protagonist role—it held a leading, almost “main character” status. It was the most famous Zoid of its time, featured in virtually all Zoids-related merchandise (such as candy and stationery) . ===== Design ===== The design of Gojulas was created by Bonpei Fujino , a designer from the early Zoids development team. Early design sketches included versions equipped with weapons in the mouth . Although officially classified as a Dinosaur-type, interviews with Tomy staff reveal that the name itself shows heavy influence from Godzilla of the *Godzilla* series . Along with Salamander, inspired by Rodan, and Molga, inspired by Mothra, the design concept is said to have paid homage to the film *Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster* . Mitsutoshi Tokuyama, one of the co-founders of the Zoids series with Fujino, recalled in an interview that engineer Teruo Nikaidou had declared, “We have no choice but to do ○○○!” When the interviewer asked to redact that portion, he restated| “We’re going to do the ultimate Tyrannosaurus!” He explained that choosing a “two-legged carnivorous dinosaur” was like bringing out the true headliner . ===== Specifications ===== |Name| Gojulas (ゴジュラス) / Zoids Gojulas | |Number| RBOZ-003 (old) , RZ-001 (new) | |Affiliation| Helic Republic | |Classification| Dinosaur type / Tyrannosaurus type | |Deployment| ZAC 2030 | |Length| 26.0 m | |Height| 21.0 m | |Width| 11.1 m | |Weight| 230.0 t | |Max Speed| 75 km/h | |Crew| 1| |Main Pilots|\\ Major Turner \\ Fokker \\ Rob Herman \\ Second Lieutenant Kenji Thomas | ==== Armaments & Equipment (Old) ==== |Panober 20mm Anti-Air Beam ×4 | |Maxer 30mm Beam Guns ×4 | |76mm Rapid-Fire Guns ×4 | |Optical Sensor | |Radiator Fins | |Energy Tank / Rocket Booster | ==== Armaments & Equipment (New) ==== |Hyper Bite Fang | |Crusher Claws ×2 | |70mm Twin Heavy Machine Guns ×2 | |Panober 20mm Ground-to-Air Beam Guns ×2 | |Maxer 30mm Multipurpose Machine Guns ×2 | |TAZ 20mm Linear Laser Gun | |ARZ 20mm Beam Gun | |AMD 30mm Twin Beam Guns | ==== Armaments (HMM) ==== |Hyper Killer Bite Fang| |Crusher Claws ×2| |70mm Twin Heavy Machine Guns ×2| |Panober 20mm Ground-to-Air Beam Guns ×2| |Maxer Multipurpose Machine Guns ×2| |TRZ 20mm Linear Laser Gun| |ARZ 20mm Beam Gun| |AMD 30mm Beam Gun (internal, deployable)| ===== Background ===== The Helic Republic’s dinosaur-type Zoid , designed primarily for independent local combat operations . Though Gojulas would later establish an “invincible era,” immediately after rollout it suffered numerous problems. Its ferocious temperament made piloting difficult, and its large body lacked agility, leaving it at a disadvantage against smaller Zoids . Because of this, soldiers mocked it as a “slow machine,” and it was mainly used as a work mecha, leveraging its strong arms . However, in ZAC 2029, after the emergency landing of Globally III, advanced Terran technology was introduced . Gojulas was retrofitted, transforming it into a full combat machine . Scientists determined that as a bipedal Zoid, its arms could serve as powerful melee weapons. First, the entire body’s metal composition was reviewed, reducing weight by 40% while improving strength by 20% . This made its movements faster, giving it the agility to evade enemy attacks . Next, it was equipped with anti-Zoid weapons such as laser and beam guns, supported by the introduction of an FCS (Fire Control System), enabling it to attack multiple enemies at once . As with other Zoids retrofitted with Terran technology, computer-assisted control, power assists, energy boosts, and a supercharger were added, massively increasing its power . Thus, Gojulas was reborn as the Helic Republic’s mightiest war machine . During the opening stages of the Central Continent War, it earned great success with its melee capabilities , maintaining superiority ratios of 1|3 against Red Horns and 1|2 against Saber Tigers , reigning as an unbeatable Zoid until the Empire developed Iron Kong in ZAC 2032 . When the Empire began mass-deploying heavily armed Zoids, the Republic enacted the “National Emergency Law (X-Day)” in ZAC 2033, prompting weapon upgrades for Gojulas . By ZAC 2047–2048, Gojulas retired from the frontlines . During the Western Continent War in ZAC 2099, only a handful survived the Planet Zi Grand Catastrophe . These were refitted with titanium armor, enhanced mobility, and upgraded output for greater firepower, with dozens still deployed . Gojulas remained one of the strongest existing Zoids , with power and melee ability rivaling even state-of-the-art Organoid System units . However, due to obsolescence and airframe lifespan limits, the successor Zoid, **Gojulas Giga**, was developed for the Neo Zenebas War . ===== Weapons & Equipment ===== **Note|** (Old) refers to Central Continent War–First Intercontinental War (Gen 1), while (New) refers to Second Intercontinental War (Gen 2). ==== Hyper Bite Fang (New) ==== The fangs of Gojulas. Powerful enough to bite off the arms of giant-class Zoids . ==== Crusher Claws (New) ==== The claws of Gojulas’s forelimbs. Large cylinders are built inside the forearms, allowing it to crush small Zoids in a single strike . Alongside its jaws and forelimbs, its tail also functions as a powerful striking weapon . ==== Panober 20mm Anti-Air Beam (Old) / Panober 20mm Ground-to-Air Beam Gun (New) ==== Mounted at the base of the tail. Powerful enough to blow away a Molga . A common armament shared with Gigasaurer, Mammoth, and Gordos. Additionally, the tail-tip block includes an internal radar . In the HMM Gojulas, this is reinterpreted as a single AMZ 30mm Beam Gun that can be stored in the tail container block . ==== Maxer 50mm Guns (Old) / Maxer 30mm Multipurpose Machine Guns (New) ==== Mounted on both sides of the tail tip. Common equipment with Gigasaurer, Mammoth, and Gordos. In the HMM version, these are foldable . ==== 76mm Rapid-Fire Guns (Old) / 70mm Twin Heavy Machine Guns (New) ==== Mounted on the abdomen. Function also as anti-air weapons . Powerful enough to pulverize Molgas . ==== Optical Sensor (Old) ==== Sensor mounted atop Gojulas’s head . The cockpit below is pressurized, enabling operations in harsh environments . ==== Radiator Fins (Old) ==== The dorsal fins of Gojulas . ==== 20mm Beam Launcher (Old) / TAZ 20mm Linear Laser Gun (New) ==== Mounted on the right foreleg. Common armament with Gigasaurer, Mammoth, and Gordos. ==== 20mm Beam Launcher (Old) / ARZ 20mm Beam Gun (New) ==== Mounted on the left foreleg. Common armament with Gigasaurer, Mammoth, and Gordos. ==== Energy Tank / Rocket Booster (Old) ==== Mounted on the backpack. Depending on the source, it is described either as a rocket booster for posture adjustment and long jumps , or as an energy tank . Gojulas also carried auxiliary rockets in the soles of its feet to boost speed . ===== Gojulas Wild Body ===== The Zoid used as the development base for Gojulas was a divine beast-type Zoid owned by the Shinto (God Tribe) of the Central Continent, who revered it as a guardian deity . Unlike the forward-leaning purebred T-Rex-type wild body used for the development of Geno Saurer and Berserk Führer, this variant had an upright posture. It possessed developed dorsal fins, a strong spine, and powerful legs, and was also used as the development base for King Gojulas . This was already an extinct ancient species on the surface . The God Tribe captured these Gojulas wild bodies from underground, raising and taming them from infancy . Even when mechanized into a “Mecha-Beast,” Gojulas retained its ferocious temperament, refusing to obey anyone but a pilot it personally accepted . Those who successfully mastered and rode it were revered as heroes within the Republic Army . ===== Kits ===== ==== Tomy (now Takara Tomy) Versions ==== Gojulas reused the body frame of Gigasaurer while achieving upright bipedal walking. However, it required a stabilizing wheel attached to the tail. A lighting gimmick using miniature bulbs (“mugi-kyuu”) was introduced for the eyes. The motorized gimmicks allowed it to swing its head side to side, move its skull to open and close the mouth, and raise and lower its arms while walking. After a time, the eyes would begin blinking and continue until the power was shut off. The lighting and walking mechanisms were independent and could be operated separately. Power source| two size C batteries (same as Gigasaurer) plus two size AA batteries housed in the tail rocket booster, for a total of four batteries—at the time, the highest battery count among Zoids. The tail tip and back of the head contained metal ballast, without which walking and mouth movement would not function. Manual gimmicks included the opening canopy cockpit and movable claws. The earliest versions used clear parts with the bulbs painted red . Later versions used semi-transparent parts in various colors with unpainted bulbs. Besides Gojulas, the only Zoids to use two C batteries plus two AAs were the original Ultrasaurus and King Gojulas . ==== RBOZ-003 Gojulas ==== Released April 1984. Its vertically oriented package design was unique among first-generation large Zoids, shared only with King Gojulas. ==== Limited Edition Gojulas Mk-II ==== Released October 1986. A commemorative kit marking Zoids’ 3rd anniversary, adding cannons, missile pods, and other new parts to the standard Gojulas . The box was the same size as those of the ultra-large class Zoids such as Ultrasaurus. The added parts were later sold individually as modification sets for large Zoids. In the second-generation LB (Legend Blox) series, this variation was renewed alongside Murasame Liger, Iron Kong, and Red Horn. ==== Gojulas Mk-II Mass Production Type ==== Released June 1987. This version introduced a revised mold, with a rack for long-range cannons built into the back rocket booster. From then on, all Gojulas versions included this cannon rack. Its eyes glowed green originally, but the 2005 reissue omitted this feature and used red lighting instead. The box size matched that of the limited Mk-II. ==== RZ-001 Gojulas ==== Released August 28, 1999. Featured metallic molding colors. The tail mounting shaft was reinforced to reduce risk of breakage. ==== Gojulas the Ogre ==== Released July 2000. This kit corresponded to the old limited Mk-II, but with weapon parts recolored black instead of gray. The body molding was changed to a calmer yellow tone, brighter overall compared to the original. The diorama photos used the standard Gojulas battery cover, but the limited-type cover was also included. Packaging differed from the first-generation style, being thicker than the normal box. ==== Gojulas Mariner ==== Released September 2002. Featured bluish-purple body coloration with orange caps. This was essentially a recolor of the Mk-II Mass Production Type. ==== Zoids Gojulas (Jungle Warfare Type) ==== Released August 2006 as a limited kit at “Chara Hobby 2006,” in collaboration with the *Hobby Japan* article *Zoids Battle Angle III| History of Zoids* . Mold colors were changed to dark green. ==== Gojulas Holotech ==== Released October 2006 as a Toys “R” Us exclusive. Molded entirely in clear parts, with white light-up eyes. \--- ==== HMM Series ==== ==== RBOZ-001 Gojulas ==== 40th release in the HMM series. This kit featured fully articulated joints, allowing a forward-leaning posture like a modern dinosaur. The tail-tip Maxer 30mm multipurpose machine guns were foldable, while the AMD 30mm beam gun on top of the tail tip was an internal deployable weapon accessed via hatch. The tail stabilizer was rotatable. Kotobukiya store exclusives included a “New Republic Image Color” parts set (white and black armor with orange canopy). ==== Gojulas the Ogre ==== 43rd release in the HMM series, announced December 2016. The energy tubes were reinterpreted as a linked belt structure similar to Iron Kong PK. Color scheme was based on the Takara Tomy version but with the dorsal fins and tail colors adjusted, the tail in particular echoing the Mk-II limited version. The Buster Cannons and Shock Cannons were also sold separately as the “Gojulas Cannon Set.” In November 2019, a recolored version, **Gojulas Gunner**, was released exclusively at Kotobukiya Shops. ===== In-Story Appearances ===== ==== HISTORY OF ZOIDS ==== After X-Day, Kamikaze Joe’s modified Gojulas appears and defeats a Red Horn . ==== All About Battle Machine Beasts ==== Appears in “Zoids Planet War Chronicle Side Story| The Battle of Ardanne.” Piloted by Kamikaze Joe, a boy who arrived from Earth aboard Globally III. Despite struggling against Imperial Zoids, he successfully drove them back . ==== Battle Story ==== ===== Zoids Battle Story (Shogakukan) ===== In *Zoids Battle Story* Vol. 1, during a clash with Red Horns in ZAC 2030, Gojulas displayed overwhelming combat power . By ZAC 2032, the Zenebas Empire developed the anti-Gojulas Zoid, Iron Kong. During the defense of Republic territory, roughly 200 Gojulas units faced about 150 Iron Kongs in the great plains. After a missile barrage from the Iron Kongs inflicted losses, the Gojulas units pressed forward in a desperate charge. Catching the Iron Kongs as they shifted missile launchers from their shoulders to their arms in preparation for melee combat, the Gojulas closed in and forced close-quarters battle. Although the Republic succeeded in repelling the Iron Kongs, losses were severe| 140 Gojulas and 100 Iron Kongs destroyed. Thus, the “invincible era” of Gojulas ended after only two years . In response, the Republic began a power-up project, developing Gojulas Mk-II . In ZAC 2035, intelligence on a new Imperial Zoid led to four Salamanders airlifting a Gojulas for a solo infiltration mission into an Imperial base. There it discovered Saber Tiger and collected data . In ZAC 2037, two Gojulas units jointly immobilized the Ultra Saurus stolen by Imperial spy commando “Echo,” aiding a Cannon Tortoise in blasting it . In *Zoids Battle Story 2* (ZAC 2044), bases were attacked by Toby Duncan piloting Deathsaurer, with multiple Gojulas units and their squads annihilated . In *Zoids Battle Story 4* (ZAC 2047, July–December), several Gojulas were stationed on a remote island in the Florescio Sea, participating in Operations Kamado and Tsubame to confront Deathsaurer . In ZAC 2048 (September), before Mad Thunder’s completion, numerous scrapped Gojulas frames were camouflaged and transported to a fake research facility to lure and deceive the Empire . ===== Official Fanbooks (Shogakukan) ===== In *Official Fanbook Vol. 1*, Rob Herman’s Gojulas fought valiantly against encirclement by Guylos Zoids during the opening battles on the Northern Europa Continent in August, ZAC 2099 . In *Official Fanbook Vol. 2*, during the Elgaile Coastal Defense Battle in March, ZAC 2100, a Gojulas confronted Geno Saurer but was destroyed under swarms of Rev Raptors . In *Official Fanbook Vol. 4* (October, ZAC 2101), two Gojulas units were deployed in the battle at Sesrilnim City on the Dark Continent. However, they were defeated when confronted by the resurrected Deathsaurer . ==== Anime ==== In *Zoids (Chaotic Century)*, Gojulas appears fossilized in stone in episode 1. All other machines are depicted as Gojulas Gunner or Gojulas the Ogre configurations. In the series, it is also referred to with the abbreviation “ZG” . ==== Live Action / Tokusatsu ==== In toy promotion commercials produced by Toho, Gojulas appeared alongside Iron Kong and Salamander. Director Eiichi Asada, who had worked as assistant SFX director on *Sayônara Jupiter* and the *Godzilla* series, later became one of the special effects directors on the *Millennium Godzilla Series* (*Godzilla 2000 Millennium* to *Godzilla| Final Wars*) . Later, when Ultrasaurus and Saber Tiger appeared, Tokusatsu production was handled by Toei instead of Toho. In the mid-1980s special effects short *Zoids World*, Gojulas appeared alongside Salamander, Gordos, and Red Horn, defeating Red Horn in battle . In the overseas release of *Godzilla 1985*, a child is seen playing with Gojulas among other toys in a newly filmed scene after the opening . In the film *Juvenile*, an RZ-version Gojulas kit appears displayed in the protagonist’s room, alongside other characters featured in *CoroCoro Comic*. In 1992, the music video *Integration Eight X Ten* by FRONT 242 featured brightly painted (fluorescent orange/green) Gojulas kits in eye-catch footage, one of which is smashed by a hammer mid-walk. ==== Games ==== |**Famicom| Zoids Central Continent War (1987)** – Gojulas is the protagonist unit (“gojurasu”). As group battles became more common, the standard Gojulas’s weapons were insufficient in both range and penetration against enemy armor. The need for large-caliber cannons, and the necessity of countering the missile-armed Iron Kong, prompted its development . Among nine prototype variations produced by different research institutes, the “Long-Range Cannon Type” designed at the Oguita Institute was officially adopted . Compared to the normal model, its performance improvements gave it superiority ratios of 3|1 against the standard Iron Kong and 10|1 against Red Horn . Besides the machine piloted by Roy J. Thomas, elite “Mk-II Assault Units” and other variations were deployed in the 1st and 3rd Armies . By around ZAC 2047–2048, during the Central Continent War, it retired from the frontlines . ===== Weapons & Equipment ===== ==== Quadruple Rapid-Fire Gun ==== Mounted on the left foreleg. ==== Long-Range Cannons ==== Two mounted on the back. These were 38cm-caliber live-ammunition guns . They boasted long range, and unlike missiles, allowed repeated firing . These gave Gojulas Mk-II the ability to strike Iron Kongs with preemptive long-range attacks . The firing arc was wide, and the cannons could even be aimed rearward . ==== 20mm Anti-Air Beam Guns ==== Same type as the Panober 20mm Anti-Air Beam. ==== 30mm Beam Guns ==== Same type as the Maxer 30mm Beam Guns. ==== 50mm Guns ==== Same type as the Maxer 50mm Guns. ==== Missile Pods ==== Mounted on the abdomen, replacing the 76mm rapid-fire guns. ==== Energy Tank ==== Mounted on the back. It was nicknamed “Beast Ogre” (獣鬼) . Developed during the Western Continent War, when the Republic was outnumbered by the Guylos Empire’s superior Zoid count, it was conceived as a high-performance machine to cover the gap . It was also considered a candidate successor to the aging Gojulas, especially after the appearance of Geno Saurer . It boasted the agility to capture high-speed Zoids , the raw strength to tear apart an Iron Kong PK instantly, and regenerative ability to heal minor damage . Its combat potential was rated on par with Death Stinger . With its heavy equipment, it was theoretically 5–10 times more powerful than a standard Gojulas . However, during activation trials, its violent nature rejected all pilots, forcing it to be converted to an unmanned, autopilot configuration . (A separate successor, Gojulas Giga, would later be developed instead .) As an automated machine, it was deployed as a support artillery unit, stationed at Rob Base on the Western Continent . Later, the mercenary Irvine, having lost his Command Wolf, was uniquely accepted as its pilot . From then on, during the Second All-Out War, it joined the Destroyer Army as escort for Ultrasaurus the Destroyer . After the Neo Zenebas takeover of the Central Continent, its ability to synchronize with its pilot’s mind made it immune to Dark Spiner’s jamming wave. During the Gojulas Giga Base Defense Battle, it destroyed several Dark Spiner units using this advantage . ===== Weapons & Equipment ===== ==== Long-Range Buster Cannons ==== Mounted on the back. The same design as the Gojulas Mk-II long-range cannons. In the ensuing fierce battle, J.K. loses his reason, and the Deathsaurer, likewise losing control, withdraws. The Gojulas becomes the rallying point for the Republic counterattack. Later, in a Deathsaurer pursuit mission, it accompanies a Mad Thunder to a northern island. After defeating an Iron Kong, it clashes with the Deathsaurer again, which disables the Mad Thunder. The duel ends in a violent clash, with both machines caught in the collapse of an iceberg triggered by the Deathsaurer’s unleashed Charged Particle energy.
